The hosts are fresh off a 2-1 win over Puebla. Lucas Cavallini put Puebla ahead on the hour mark from the spot, while Edgar Méndez equalized the game with 11 minutes remaining in regulation time. Five minutes later, Dibber Cambindo scored the match-winning goal for the visiting team.
Meanwhile, Club América took maximum points with a 2–0 regular season win over Juarez. Diego Valdés broke the deadlock in the 16th minute and then provided provider for Álvaro Fidalgo in the 84th minute.
The win took the Eagles to the top of the standings, earning the maximum points from three games. Necaxa are fifth with six points to show for their efforts in two games.
